Should Dogs Be Allowed on the Furniture?

Pets are considered by many to be part of their family. They can add excitement and joy to our home. Their presence can bring joy and excitement into our homes. It has been proven that the relationship between an owner and their dog can have a positive effect on emotion.

Living with a dog or cat can be challenging. Dogs on furniture is one of the challenges that you will face. Do you allow your dog to sit on the sofa? It’s a good idea for your dog to sleep in your bed. Where should your dog go to sleep? Does your dog need its own bed?

Most dog owners will have at least asked themselves these questions. You can find many reasons to not allow your dog onto the furniture, including concern about spreading germs or creating bad habits. You can reduce mess and spread of illness if you decide to allow your dog to sleep on your couch or bed.

Transmission of Diseases and Dirt

Although we love them as much as people, they remain animals. It’s in their nature to bring dirt and other debris in from the outside. Let’s be honest, most of that dirt and debris ends up in our couches or beds. Infectious diseases transmitted by dogs to people are also real threats. While rare, there are many reasons why dogs need beds.

This can affect sleep quality

While it’s fun to sleep with a fluffy ball next to you in the morning, some people find bed sharing to be detrimental to their sleeping cycle. Just like us, dogs also turn and twist while sleeping. If you are a heavy sleeper, and your dog is on furniture at night, it’s possible that you will be awakened several times.

You could also end up having to buy new mattresses or sofa cushions if you have an accident by letting your dog sleep on your bed.

Allergens

Your dog’s fur, paws and skin become carriers of allergens every time you take your pet outside. Dust and pollen tend to be the main culprits in this situation. They can be transferred by your dog to your couch or bed, which may worsen allergy symptoms.

There’s also shedding, a process that is natural for canine companions. Unfortunately, this results in hairs on furniture and other areas of the home.

The Negative Effect on Dog Behavior

Territorial animals, dogs are. You may be accidentally telling your dog that the area you are letting them sit in (or even sleep on) is part of its territory if you allow it to do so. You may also notice that they growl at you and other people when you try to use furniture.

Select pet-friendly home textiles

When it comes to the mess that our pets leave behind, not all fabrics are equal. When shopping for a sofa, consider options made of genuine leather and its vegan equivalent. They are non-porous, tightly-woven materials which are easy to vacuum and will not have dog hair in it after your pet’s nap.

Fabrics made for outdoor use are usually stain, odor, and moisture resistant. They make a wonderful alternative to indoor furniture. Rugs made from natural fibers like jute or seagrass look great and are pet friendly.
